Lucy AAC fly Isabella over 500 miles to receive neonatal care closer to home

Paisley, Scotland > Plymouth, England

500 miles

Isabella was born three months early at 28 weeks whilst her parents were on holiday in Paisley, Scotland. She was immediately placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as being so premature she needed specialised medical care. Isabella needed help breathing, feeding and required constant monitoring.

Isabella needed to be moved to a hospital closer to home as she was over 500 miles from her home in Devon and faced a long hospital stay. The doctors and nurses at Paisley were also unable to plan for Isabella’s long-term care as they knew at some point, she would be transferred home and out of their region of care.

Due to Isabella’s fragile state, she could not be moved the 500-mile distance by road ambulance. The safest way for Isabella to be transferred to a hospital closer to home was by Lucy Air Ambulance for Children in their aeroplane.

We transferred Isabella from Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, close to the family’s home. She is now able to receive the specialist care she needs, all whilst her doctors and nurses plan for her long-term care. This transfer has also made everyday life so much easier for Isabella’s parents who can visit her every day from home. Isabella is progressing well and her parents are hopeful that she will be discharged in the new few weeks.
